WWE Raw Review (Oct. 5, 2009)

WWE RAW (October 5, 2009)

by: Mike Shannon (DLman91@hotmail.com)

-So it's STEELERS NIGHT ON RAW!!!

Swagger

-Yes, it's a GREAT time to be a Pittsburgh sports fan. We've got 6 Super Bowl trophies (most all time, of course) and 2 best hockey players in the world (to go along with that Stanley Cup they just won). But tonight is all about the 2-time Super Bowl champion...the best young QB in the NFL and YOUR personal hero...Big Ben Roethlisberger.

-The only way that this could be better was if Mario Lemieux was assigned as the special guest referee.

Man amongst boys

-On to wrestling, I caught Hell in the Cell and thought the DX main event and the Jerishow match was freaking sweet. However, the rest was basically filler as the burial of CM Punk left me completely stunned and shaking my head.

-LIVE from Wilkes-Barre, PA (home of the Baby Penguins!)

-Of COURSE, Big Ben has to kick us off and it's clear that there are some Eagles fans there (you can tell who they are because they are the ones that haven't showered WOOOOO!). He makes a "Diva Bowl" to kick us off as all the ladies come out in Steelers jerseys.

Diva Bowl
Face Women vs. Heel women
I'll just name them as they come in since I don't think this will last too long. Gail Kim is the referee as Mickie kicks Rosa in the face so Alicia comes in to try her luck, fresh off sucking up the PPV last night. Mickie gets two off a neckbreaker, broken by Natalya, triggering each woman taking out another one at a time. When the smoke clears, Mickie hits her DDT on Michelle McCool and pins Alicia with a victory roll.
Winners: Face Women

-Yeah this was bad, but you expected it to not? *...Randy Orton cuts short the silicone celebration to lull us to sleep with some awesome speech patterns.

-Orton proclaims his clean win to be awesome, but the crowd does not approve. I don't understand taking the title off of Cena so soon because I REALLY wish someone else got elevated so we don't get the rotating main event of HHH-Orton-Cena for the 83478237th time.

Of course, Cena comes out and wants a rematch but Orton is all like "no way man" and Cena is all like "come on please" and Orton is all like "I don't think so man" and Cena is like "I'll make it an Iron Man Match" and Orton is like "k". Cena promises this is the last match of their rivalry...I seriously hope he keeps that. Orton accepts only on the following terms: The Iron Man match is no-DQ and, if Cena loses, he's off Raw. The PPV is in Pittsburgh too, if you didn't know.

-Plug for the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, an organization that does a lot of good around the city.

-Jack Swagger promises not to lose for the rest of the year, leading us to....

Jack Swagger vs. Primo Colon
Swagger uses the usual mat wrestling stuff to control and hits a running Vader Bomb. He punishes Primo on the apron and hits a belly to belly spinebuster for two. Swagger locks on a bearhug for a rest but misses a charge to the corner and gets rollup for two. They have a slugfest and Primo hits a dropkick for two. Springboard high cross body is countered by a big boot and the Swagger gutwrench is academic for the win.
Winner: Jack Swagger

-Basically just an extended squash so that gets *3/4. Primo is totally dead weight at this point.

And now...to introduce our newest inductee Primo Colon, please welcome LEAPING LANNY POFFO!

Awesome

-Backstage, the Divas are still arguing so Santino does his best to get Alicia and Mickie to kiss and make up, but he only earns a slap to the face.

-Back in Big Ben's office, the Miz admits he was pinned last night but is still awesome. He wants another shot at the US title tonight, which he gets, BUT he has to change his catchphrase to "I'm awful" if he loses. Ben should have just made him admit he was a Cleveland Browns fan, that's much worse.

Wow

-Recap of the shitfest that is the Hornswoggle-Chavo storyline.

Chavo Guerrero and Chris Masters vs. MVP and Mark Henry
Henry overpowers Masters while Cole says Mark's neck is 22 inches long, why that's almost as long as my....nevermind. Henry misses a splash and tags in MVP, who falls victim to Chavo's distraction and gets clotheslined down. Chavo comes in and works over MVP before getting a two off an elbowdrop. Chavo charges and gets hid with a judo throw, allowing MVP to hit a flying clothesline and the Baller elbow. Masters accidentally nails Chavo trying to break up the pin, Henry gets rid of him, and MVP gets the weak pin.
Winners: MVP and Mark Henry

-A tag match without a heat segment? No thanks *1/4. Post-match, Masters attacks Chavo to break up a legendary tag team that has lasted a legendary month. Hornswoggle saves Chavo from certain doom by biting the ass of the Masterpiece. Good Lord.

-Big Ben hits the ring but Jerishow is quickly out to do their weekly verbally sparring with the guest host. Show asks where the Steelers offensive line is, so Darnell Stapleton, Willie Colon, Trai Essex, Chris Kemoeatu, Justin Hartwig, and Max Starks hit the ring. Jericho runs his mouth while Show goes face to face with Starks (a big wrestling fan).

The Steelers huddle up and actually line up to face the Big Show, who takes a powder. This draws out DX to a nice pop while a joke with no girlfriend in a Ravens jersey jumps around like a goon. I think he was just reminded his team lost to the Steelers 3 times last year....ouch. HBK is in a bad mood because he got his ass beat last night and wants a match with Jerishow. The heels want no part of it, so Ben forces them to and punctuates it with the Steelers and DX doing the DX Chop.

Unreal shirt

United States Title
Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz
Kofi is now Ghana (shoot) instead of Jamaica (kayfabe). Stalemate to start but Miz headbutts him down and puts the boots to Kofi. Wrestling sequence ends with Kofi rolling Miz up for two, causing the heel to take a powder. Back in, another quick sequence ends with a Miz clothesline for one. Kofi comes back with his corner punches and hammers away in the corner but gets caught going to the top and gets dumped to the floor. WE GOTTA TAKE A BREAK TONY, THE TAPE MACHINES ARE ROLLING~!

We go now to breaking news.....

We're back with Kofi countering a back suplex for two, but Miz stops that with a clothesline and a legdrop which gets two. Suddenly, Kofi hits Trouble in Paradise out of nowhere, but it knocks Miz to the outside of the ring and, by the time he gets him back inside, it only gets two. Nice spot there. Surprise small package gets two for Miz. Kofi gets all charged up and hits a double legdrop for another two. Miz bails and clotheslines Kofiu on the ropes but still gets caught with a backslide for two.

Yay-Boo slugfest leads to Kofi taking control but Miz rolls through a high cross body for another close two. Kofi gets the SOS, but Miz again kicks out at two. Kofi charges in the corner but misses and tries to land on his feet, however he loses his balance and Miz takes advantage with the Skull Crushing Finale for the win and title.
Winner and NEW Champion: The Miz

-A very good TV match that would have been even better on PPV without the commercial interruption. However, a solid match to get the title on Miz and hopefully he actually keeps it for awhile. ***1/4

-Backstage, Ben meets Santino and Hornswoggle while hilarity ensues.

-Next week, two broads from Access Hollywood who I've never heard of will host Raw. Unless they are interested in riding Space Mountain, I have no reason to care.

Jerishow vs. DX
Good bit of time left in the show, so it should be pretty good. HHH and Jericho job around before Y2J grabs a headlock but he takes a hiptoss and HBK comes in to chop away. An HBK charge only hits boot and Big Show tags in so HBK ducks out of the way and tags in HHH but WE GOTTA TAKE A BREAK~!!

We're back with Big Show working a bearhug and then hitting an avalanche in the corner for two. Jericho comes in to get his easy shots in and he hits a second turnbuckle dropkick for two. Y2J chokes him out against the ropes but misses a splash for the double KO. Hot tag to HBK who cleans house on Jericho but takes a whip to the corner and falls victim to a Big Show legdrop and standing backbreaker. Another Shawn comeback is cut off by a Jericho clothesline but HBK surprises him with a rollup, but Y2J counters that into the Walls of Jericho.

Nice visual as Shawn almost gets the tag to HHH but Jericho pulls him away as HBK's face turns to defeat. Hunter finally has enough of it and just runs in and breaks the move illegally for the double KO. Show gets the tag first but Shawn holds him off by going low with a dropkick and hitting a desperation enzugiri. FINALLY, Shawn gets the hot tag HHH who kicks Jericho's ass all around the ring. Big Show snatches HHH but Jericho hits him by accident and HHH nails the spinebuster. Pedigree attempt is stopped by Show and he suplexes BOTH members of DX in an impressive spot.

Big Show charges Hunter but gets lowbridged and tumbles to the outside while Jericho rolls him up for two. Big Show drags HHH to the outside and Shawn joins him so they can run the big guy into the post and dump him into the front row to get rid of him. Now it's Jericho all alone with DX so he does the bravest thing he possibly can do...he runs away like a coward. However, Big Ben and his offensive line (wearing DX t-shirts) come out to block the ramp to safety. DX drags him back to the ring and Sweet Chin Music ends his night.
Winners: DX

-I might be losing here but I thought that was an AWESOME main event with two great heat segments and a nicely done finish. I'm going ***3/4 for some really good stuff and a fitting end to Raw.

Final Word
Well, you had two killer matches on a TV show, so you can't complain about that at all. I would definitely check this out online if you didn't catch it live. And, for the last time, this is Big Ben's world....and you're just living in it. WOOOOO!
