Mike Shannon's TNA Impact Review (Feb. 11, 2010) Written by Mike Shannon on 02/11/10
TNA Impact! (February 11, 2010)
But first, it's time for the phenomenon that's sweeping the internet wrestling community...the segment that has become a hits-producing juggernaut, yes it's time to...
ASK MIKE ANYTHING!!!
Q: Hey man,
I've been a big wrestling fan for awhile now and you seem to be versed in the history of the WWF(E)... I've got to ask you, do you find it sad that the two best angles on TV right now are featuring a couple of guys that by all rights should be retired for good from wrestling ? I mean HBK and Hart are two of the biggest names in the industry, but they are well past their prime... What happened to Kofi ? to John Morrison ? I mean even the Miz has some skills but now he's stuck in a program with the Big Slow... oh PS Ovie rules, Crosby drools...
-Jay P.
A: Yes, it is a shame that HBK (who is on his way down) and Bret (who is DONE) are the two main draws on Raw right now. Now, because you know your history, unfortunately you'll remember that this is how the wrestling business goes sometimes. The sadder thing might be that HBK is probably still the best worker on the roster right now. Kofi seemed destined for a main event push but he cooled down after Orton sucked all his heat away in their match. Morrison seems to have the goods but they don't want to throw the machine behind him for some reason.
The problem is the same thing WCW dealt with at the end, a whole bunch of old guys people are sick of seeing and a bunch of young guys no one cares about. Yes, this downturn in business is prolonged and has been going on since 2002. The same thing happened back in the mid-90s when Savage, Hogan, Flair, Warrior, and all the other 80s stars were shown the door and slowly (but surely) the HHHs, Austins, and Rocks rose to the top. Did it happen overnight? No. Did Vince have a choice? Not at all, he did it because he had no choice.
As many others have written, wrestling is a cannibalistic society. Just when you think the business is dead, it swallows one of its jobbers and produces a new, huge star. HHH is the perfect example of it, so is Steve Austin, ditto Mick Foley. It's a rough time to be a fan right now, but I'm remaining optimistic that one of these young kids (Ziggler? Morrison? DiBiase? Some guy who hasn't debuted yet?) will catch fire and suddenly wrestling is cool again. Keep the faith my friends...keep the faith.
By the way, thank you to the Montreal Canadiens, who ended the Capitals winning streak and preserved the 92-93 Pittsburgh Penguins NHL record. Once again, the Caps are good but the Penguins are always better.

-TAPED! from Universal Studios
-Hulk Hogan is out first to declare the Impact Zone is locked down with security because he's sick of sneak attacks. Eric Young joins us as well and promises to bust up the Band. Hulk seems to think this is a fine idea.
-Backstage, The Band is sneaking around. Well why doesn't the camera guy just tell security where they are?
Eight Card Stud Qualifier Orlando Jordan vs. The Pope Taz speaks about being in a club with Orland Jordan. I didn't know Taz went to THOSE kinds of clubs...
Not that there's anything wrong with that
They battle over a lockup and Jordan slugs away but Pope comes back with a pair of armdrags and the Flip Flop N Fly. A Jordan cheapshot allows him to injure the leg and hit a dropkick followed by a swinging neckbreaker. Swinging backbreaker hurts the Pope and Jordon slugs away again, but Pope makes the comeback with a flying forearm. Taz references Jack Lambert because he's a beast.
Could kick your skinny little ass right now even though he's 57.
Coronation hits but it only gets two and Jordon hits a spinebuster for two. Jordan tries slugging away in the corner, but Pope counters and hits the Express to qualify.
Winner: The Pope
-Decent little match as Pope continues to cruise to an upper midcard spot. **3/4
-Backstage, Jeff Jarrett wants to be in the Eight Card Stud tournament but Bischoff doesn't call that starting from the bottom.
Eight Card Stud Qualifier Matt Morgan vs. Suicide Suicide chops away at Morgan, but gets caught in a fallaway slam. Elbows in the corner lead to the cocky side slam but Morgan misses a blind chrage and Suicide hits a springboard dropkick for two. Suicide flips out of a chokeslam but Morgan's had enough for his shit and hits the Carbon Footprint for the win.
Winner: Matt Morgan
-That's what you get for cheating on your busted stripper of a wife, Frankie. *1/4
As long as you don't focus on her face, she's halfway decent
-Backstage, Mick Foley says he is on-board with Bischoff as long as JB and Abyss are safe. Bischoff likes it and books Foley vs. Abyss at Against All Odds and makes them the final 2 entrants in the tournament. Uncle Eric says it there is any funny stuff, he will strip Abyss of his mask.
-Backstage, Mr. Anderson and Kurt Angle are a tag tonight and neither are happy about it.
-After a break, Kurt Angle tells Eric Young to stay put and he will deal with The Band because Hulk Hogan cannot be trusted.
X-Division Title Doug William vs. Amazing Red Red hits an enzuigiri and a dropkick to the face then another kick sends Williams to the floor. Back in, they do a pinfall reversal sequence but Williams finally gets his hands on Red and hits a reverse powerbomb and an elbow for two. They hit a resthold and Williams hits a kneedrop for two. Doug stays on him with a running knee in the corner, but takes too long going up top and gets dumped to the floor. Red follows him out with a corkscrew dive and hits a missile dropkick in the ring for two. Spinning heel kick also gets two and he tries a victory roll but it only gets two. Another spinning heel kick puts Williams down but he misses whatever off to top and Williams chucks him into the post the hits the rolling German suplex for the win.
Winner and STILL Champion: Doug Williams
-Zero psychology but the spots were nice so that gets ***1/4.
Beautiful People vs. Angelina Love & Tara Seems to me that Taz's constant screaming of "tomatoes!" and bad puns are mocking Jerry Lawler...nah. Tara looks pretty damn good for 39 years old.
This is more important
Velvet runs away from Angelina but of course it's all a ruse to get a cheapshot in and she takes over inside the ring. Velvet tags out to Madison when Angelina recovers and Tara comes in with a sunset flip for two. Snap suplex into a guillotine for Tara in a nice move and the heels have a conference outside but WE GOTTA TAKE A BREAK!!!
What?
We return with Tara being trapped in the heel corner and Velvet his a Greco-Roman hair stomp. Lacey hits a moonsault into an elbow drop in a pointless move that will probably blow her knee out sooner or later. Double KO off a double clothesline and it's hot tag Angelina who cleans house on the Beautiful Implants. Big brawl is trigger and Lacey hits Angelina with the ugly stick behind the ref's back for the win.
Winners: The Beautiful People
-Total formula tag match but the heel's offense was awful. **
-Backstage, Nigel...I mean Desmond Wolfe cuts a promo hyping the tag match tonight. He really should stick to wrestling because that wasn't very good.
Desmond Wolfe & Hernandez vs. Kurt Angle & Mr. Anderson Anderson tries his luck against Hernandez but gets squashed in the corner and tosses around the ring. Anderson fights out of a powerbomb and tags in a pissy Kurt Angle, who takes a cheap shot from Wolfe. Desmond tags himself in and works the shoulder of YOUR Olympic hero. Kurt fights out and hits a german suplex but Hernandez comes with a shoulder tackle and standing backbreaker for two.
Wolfe comes in again and hits a knee lift then goes back to work on the arm. You don't start submission shit with Kurt Angle though because he quickly turns it into the ankle lock, but Anderson has the referee occupied so he doesn't see Wolfe tap. Hernandez checks in but gets caught going to the top with the Pop Up suplex for the double KO.
Angle tries to get to his corner, but Anderson won't take the tag, so Kurt acts as his own hot tag and takes out everyone (including his partner). Wolfe catches him with the hammerlock DDT for two to stop the rally and tries the Tower of London, but Kurt reverses it into the Angle Slam. Anderson tags himself in, dumps Kurt over the top rope, and steals the pin for himself.
Winners: Kurt Angle & Mr. Anderson
-This was basically the Kurt Angle Show, which I am completely OK with **3/4. By the way, Mr. Anderson is SO gonna die.
-Samoa Joe hits the ring and calls out AJ Styles (wearing his wife's sunglasses) to get a few things off his substantial chest. He is very disappointed in AJ and promises to cripple Flair should he mouth off to him. Verbal jobbing leads to AJ making the mistake of getting in the ring and getting his ass kicked. Joe tries the Muscle Buster but Flair goes low from behind and the heel beatdown ends our segment.
-After a break, AJ Styles continues his BAD Ric Flair impersonation and meets Eric Bischoff. Uncle Eric declares himself special guest referee for his PPV match, guaranteeing a screwjob ending.
-Still backstage, Hogan meets Angle and tells him that if Kurt wants to fight The Band he better go to the ring so someone can save him.
-After ANOTHER break, Kurt Angle is in the ring and calls out The Band. Waltman charges and gets his ass kicked and Hall fares no better. Angle puts the ankle lock on Hall but Waltman uses brass knuckles from behind and they beat down Angle.
Hogan struts his way down to the ring as the announcers speculate about a heel turn. Hulk gets handed the brass knuckles but nails Hall and Waltman instead and we fade to black...
Final Word This was a show that was chugging along very nicely until it kinda limped to an end. I was fairly entertained throughout the first hour and a half but they really needed something strong at the end. Still a decent show, but could have been much much better.
